Leaving Trieste tomorrow

Today we saw no museums, per se. We dropped into an art show that featured paintings by children from Moldova. We dropped into another show that displayed panels of Ulysses done by an graphic novelist.

Earlier in the day, we took a long bus ride to Opicina, a small town close to the Slovenian border. The population remains largely Slovenian, as is evident from a walk through the local graveyard. The locals speak a special dialect called Inner Carnolian, which is related to the Karst dialect.

It's a quiet and charming town. We were there early in the afternoon, so much of the commerce was closed for a few hours. We wandered through the back streets, admiring the flowers in people's gardens and the unique form of the chimneys in the town. We visited the cemetery, marveling at the variety of family names that were represented in the small graveyard.

We have loved Trieste. It's not a flashy city. It's not an especially polished town. It's not even a very exciting city. But it seems like a very interesting and civilized city.

Tonight we went again to Buffet da Siora Rosa, a place that was started by Signora Rosa shortly after World War II. The restaurant is still run by family, and it shows. The attention to detail in the food. The attention given to the clientele. While we were sitting at dinner tonight, we noted that the couple of people who were sitting in back of us last night also returned.

The meal tonight included sausage and sauerkraut, mushrooms in a pasta & egg mixture, salad, and apple studel for dessert.

Here are a few photos of the place . . . .

  1. I vaguely remember Trieste as rainy, gray and unfriendly. But I was young, poor and ignorant so it all balanced out.
